An architect by trade, the Chilean Sebastian Correa has made waves in Shanghai as a talented illustrator, screen printer, and photographer. Previous shows in 2019 in Shanghai have spotlighted waidiren, encapsulated in shows such as #squatstudies and Relaciones, respectively. With ayi & shushu, Correa maintains his focus on the eminently unique metropolis of Shanghai and its people, but shifts his ability for abstraction to localized movements within the city.
Confident brush strokes, bold colors, and strong figures characterize Correa’s original acrylic prints. His practice is minimalist and an invitation to simplicity. Centered on the lack of noise, the silent margins of his paper serve as space for metaphor and imagination, as what is left unexpressed remains just as important as what is. Correa’s works are simultaneously playful and nostalgic, whether dancing couples in the park or taiji practitioners moving in unison on the city square.
Correa’s illustrative perspective unravels the ways in which the city shapes people and people shape the city. Indeed, only a few lines are enough for the audience to immediately understand the context. Balancing the elemental and the ornamental, the power of Correa’s illustrations is rooted in the evocative ability of narrative, and executed by building links from the most basic.
