We thought fire was an animal

January 25, 2019 in Shanghai, China

The Argentinian artist Francisco Vazquez Murillo’s solo show We thought fire was an animal spotlights humanity’s conflicted relationship with (extra)terrestrial and elemental forces.

His work exists somewhere between the representation of movements around the sun and the innocence and trepidation of our evolutionary ancestors who first encountered the power of fire. At the heart of this crossroads, we see human arrogance in the misguided belief that we have already conquered this planet and its nature.

Through mixed media, this exhibition seeks to illuminate and establish relationships between the movements of bodies: those human and celestial, both the small and the giant. In this context, the artist poses a critical question for our future: How aware are we of the flame and air that we carry?
